I am going sugar-free

I am going sugar-free this month...

I am REALLY excited about doing this challenge,
but at the same time...

kinda scared. :P

I thought I would ask any/all of my blog readers - for those of you who do sugar-free 'permanently' or are on a sugar-fast - what do you do to help you stay away from sugar?  What are some meal planning that you do?  What sorts of meals do you eat?  What are some things that you had to completely cut out of your menus?

I'd love and appreciate any advice any of you could give me!! :)

Please pray for me while on this challenging journey...
*hugs*

Green smoothies! Those things are my heroes when it comes to not eating sugar. I don't really have a recipe, but I'm sure you can google one.

Another thing I've done is pray every day for the strength to be able to just say no to anything sugary. It does help, amazingly. Even though it may just be a little thing, the Lord does care, and He's there to help. :)

One last tip: stay out of the room when your family or friends are eating sugary things. It's just easier that way. :) Better than being torture with the smells, and the satisfied looks on everyone else's faces. . . . ;)

Let me know how it goes! I'm still working on this . . . and right now I'm not doing so well at staying off. :-/

Blessings to you as you begin this journey. . . . (I don't believe in luck.) ;)

I like that you picked the shortest month of the year to do this ;) haha, jk!! I know that's not what you're thinking :)
I don't know if I've ever taken on a whole month before, but I've done it for a week.
Good for you!!
Love ya,

For me, I would eat fruits and honey to keep off the bad sugar cravings. I would cut out pop, pastries, candy bars, and high fructose corn syrup products.

Hope this helps. :)

I've gone sugar-free before: I've done several month long fasts and last year, I went sugar free for 4-5 months (except an occasional Sunday).

My biggest piece of advice to you is to stay firm. It's easy to rationalize something in your mind and give in, but it's important not to!

Also, what type of sugar-free are you talking about? Just desserts? Or are you doing any sugar. That can cover a whole range of things: it cancels out most bread, a lot of condiments and salad dressings, and a host of other things - you'd be surprised at the things that have sugar in them! And if you want to go really hard-core: you can take out fruit and fruit juices too (honestly, fruit is about 95% sugar - just in a healthier form).

My advice though, if you want to try this, is that you don't cut every bit of sugar out of your diet (dessert, any added sugar items *and* fruit). Unless, of course, you don't eat much of it anyway - than you probably could do it, otherwise that sudden type of deprivation is hard to handle - mentally and physically. Your body will start craving everything and you'll find it hard to resist. That being said, it can be done (I've done similar things before) - but the key there is to stay super firm for the first week. That will be the hardest to get through, after that it will get easier and easier to say no.

Anyway, those are my two cents. Have fun!

Ugh..I've tried to do this several times. I have such a bad sweet tooth that its better to try to cute back. Once I told myself I was going to have ANY sugar, I went crazy! EVERYTHING has sugar in it!

Melanie has been off sugar for six months due to some medical problems. It depends on if you're going off all sugar, or just white, refined sugar (she is off everything, though she does eat fruit). We've had good success making fruit cobblers/pies sugar free, using unsweetened apple sauce or fruit juice to add some extra flavor.
Also, xylitol is a satisfactory substitute that isn't as dangerous as the artificial sweeteners--it works ok in baking. You just have to experiement!
Hot cocoa with unsweetened cocoa and stevia works well, too!

I personally still use honey. Sucralose is also a good substitute as well.

Fyi, at first everything tastes bland, but then things with added sugar become too sweet.

Are you taking out honey as well? And are you still eating foods that simply have no added surgar?

Haha! I’m doing that, too…though, I’m shooting for three months. =) It’s pretty hard right now as it was just Olivia’s birthday, but since we never have anything sweet in our house anyways (besides birthdays), it should be somewhat easy! ;)

I’m also trying to drink eight cups of water a day, run at least five miles daily, stretch a lot and do sit-ups/push-ups, stuff like that. =) I just really want to be as *healthy* as I can be! I am already seeing some differences, too..

Pray for me in this, as well, though! Will do, for you..

Blessings,
Lucia

Thanks to EVERYONE for your encouragement, prayers, and suggestions!!
To answer some questions...
I am going sugar-free of just about everything - including juice! I am using xylitol, SOME agave, but mostly honey. Ooh, and carob!! :D Now I actually get an EXCUSE for eating it so much! :D *haha*

Again, thanks to everyone! *hugs*
