I have noticed that so many people in this culture use the word ‘awesome’…like, a lot.
Someone gets a new iPod – ‘Oh, it’s awesome!’
Someone did really well at something – ‘Dude, that was awesome!’
When people talk about a movie – ‘Yeah, that one was awesome.’
Everywhere I go – churches, conferences, stores – I hear that word being used. I can be almost 100% positive that you’ve heard it somewhere today.
Where did that word originate from? Like, what does it really mean?
Well…awesome means:
- Overwhelming
- Breath-taking
- Grand
- Splendid
- Remarkable
- Amazing
- Awe-inspiring
- Astounding
- Humbling
Over a year ago or so, I made a resolution. To stop using the word ‘awesome’ for things that…weren’t.
An iPod isn’t grand. (No, it’s not) If someone accomplishes something very well, I’m sure it wasn’t breath-taking. And no matter what movie you watched, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t awe-inspiring.
The only thing I could think of that fits all of those descriptions…isn’t even a thing. It’s a Being.
In my eyes, God is the only One who could fit all those descriptions. And when I made my resolution not to use that word (awesome) so loosely, I decided that the only time that I would say it…was when it had something to do with God. Something God created…something God did in a person…hearing that someone got saved, etc.
So you might be wondering, ‘Okay, Raquel, why are you writing this post?’ Well, I am definitely not trying to make you feel guilty, or telling you what to do (if you use the word ‘awesome’ a lot), or anything else. :) haha This is more of a ‘this is what I do’-type post. Just like my one on modesty, or courtship, or any of my other articles. I never write something, trying to make other people agree with me. I’m just writing because…this is my blog. ;)
Anyway…hope you enjoyed just hearing my thoughts…
Blessings to you all!

Actually, I am guilty when it comes to using the word "awesome" for things that are less than it. My mom already told me what exactly the word meant and that I should only use it for God. At first, I wanted to say it was just a word and I could use it for anything I though was "awesome". But I know it belongs to the One most high. He is awesome. Thank you for reminding me (I need to be constantly reminded about this) to use this reverential word for Him only. Your post hits straight to the point, and I'm very thankful for it. Something tells me it's time to totally stop using the word "awesome" for anything else but God. And I believe it's time for everyone to do so.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I try to do this too, and it's hard when everyone around you is saying it. It's not like it's a bad word, but it should be reserved for God. :)
I've been thinking the SAME thing lately!!!! I totally agree!
Blessings and love,
Lauren Elaine
Hello Miss Raquel!
I have recently found your blog and have enjoyed reading it! It is so refreshing to find blogs that honor God and encourage young ladies in Him as they are very rare these days! Thanks so much!
I am not sure if you a really familiar with my friend and I's ministry blog Royal Daughters of the King {www.royal-daughters-of-the-king.blogspot.com} but if so you might know about our monthly Royal Council which is a question and answer form. This next month we will be featuring the question of why its so important to choose our friends wisely and those that are Christians and we were thinking about having a few ladies answering the question with us and posting it on that day. We were wondering if you would be willing to write an answer to that question, 2-4 paragraphs for us with a short bio and picture of yourself at the end. You can contact me through our contact page on RDOTK. Please let me now what you think!
I also had a neat idea for a post you might do here on God's Daughter! I know how much you love Narnia due to the many Narnia post {I love them all! I'm a huge Narnia nerd! :D} so I was thinking it would be neat for you to do a post with a bit about each Narnia actor such as their birthday, age, were they live, etc. I would love to know a bit more about them through something like this! Again this is such an idea...just though I would share.
Blessing to you and your lovely little blog!
Bethany Ann
We have the exact same views about this word, girly! *winks*

Raquel, I agree completely with everything you said! "Awesome" is used way too freely. I try to do what you're trying to do - not use it for anything that's NOT awesome. Instead, I say like, "That's cool," or something. Because OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD. NOT "our ipod is an awesome ipod." that's pathetic.
LOL Thanks for the great post! (I just almost wrote awesome :P!)
That is so true... Our God is awesome, only HIM!
Great post! :D

I say "awesome" a lot, but I think that "awesome" is an awesome word.
An iPod is awesome, because God gave someone the idea to make that iPod, A friend can do something awesome because God gave them the ability to do so.
Anyway that's just my two cents.
Love,

and also i VERY much enjoyed this post. EXTREEMLY thought provoking about how loosely we do us that word! very very true! thank you!
id love to hear from you again!
♥ Koda ♥
I'm guilty of using awesome way too loosely. I had heard before that God is the only thing that deserves the word awesome, and for quite some time, I only used awesome in reference to God.
The thing is, I live in California, and the word awesome is big. Like super big. When I have friends visit they always point it out.
I think just being around it all the time, it creeped back into my vocabulary.
I will definitely try to remember NOT to use it on non-awesome things.
This post was very thought provoking.
Hehe, I use the word awesome alot too. But, you have put it so wonderfully! Thanks for sharing.
~Rebecca

Have a wonderful day!
